…On his CD “ATOPIE”, Gramss develops his entire, pluralistic bass universe, between ur-bass and space-bass. On the one hand, he plays an instrument from the 1880s, which he inherited from Peter Kowald; on the other, he demonstrates the viability of the large stringed uncle for the future when it is in the right hands!
What conglomerates in the quartets and quintets with Robert Landfermann, Dieter Manderscheid, Joscha Oetz, Barre Phillips and Clayton Thomas etc., and thus in Bassmasse too – his double bass orchestra with over 50 large droners – is something that Gramss traces back to the core and germ cell here . ‘Voyage’ is dedicated in the memory of his duo partner, the Musica Nova bassist Stefano Scodanibbio, who died on January 8, 2012. His legacy and that of Peter Kowald are in good hands with Gramss…
